Maui’s Mayor, Charmaine Tavares, signed Maui’s new Bed & Breakfast bill into legislation on January 7, 2009. This new bill establishes a new permitting process for B&B’s. The Maui County Council submitted the bill as the result of the public support that was shown at several community forums.
Transient Vacation Rentals (TVR’s) and B&B’s have been a controversial topic here in Maui County. Critics say that vacation rentals are disruptive to the neighborhood. Proponents point out the revenue that it generates for the county, supporting local businesses and often helping homeowners subsidize their properties.
This bill deals only with B&B’s, which refer to short term rentals where the owner is on property, while TVR’s refer to short term rentals where the owner is absent. It is hoped that this new legislation will streamline the permitting process, which was known to be quite cumbersome and complicated. The new bill caps the number of permits and sets rules and guidelines that owners must comply with to keep their permits.
